LIMOS

The City of Vienna to Implement LIMOS®

PROJECT OF THE MONTH APRIL 2025 | With the switch to daylight saving time, the mornings have become darker once again, bringing the importance of reliable street lighting into focus. Ensuring the stability of lampposts is a key safety concern, and the City of Vienna is relying on our system: LIMOS®, a non-destructive testing method developed by VCE.

The new, more efficient, and user-friendly design of LIMOS®, further developed by Martin Fritz (CC Structural Health Monitoring) will be tested by the City of Vienna on 6,400 lampposts starting in August 2025. The method enables rapid on-site evaluation without causing traffic disruptions or operational restrictions.

Reliable Testing for Maximum Safety

LIMOS® allows for the on-site assessment and documentation of a lampposts condition, ensuring early detection of potential damage. A sensor is mounted at a height of two meters, and the pole is set into vibration by a light blow from a rubber hammer. The vibrations are then measured with special sensors and transmitted to a tablet, which analyzes the movements and detects if the lamppost is damaged right on site. This offers several key advantages:

  • Non-destructive testing with immediate results
  • No traffic disruptions or operational limitations
  • High legal certainty for infrastructure operators

As a leader in engineering innovations, VCE provides comprehensive expertise in infrastructure safety, including:

  • Development of testing methods
  • Programming of inspection software
  • Design and manufacture of inspection devices
  • Training of inspectors at partner companies
  • Data evaluation and support

With LIMOS®, the City of Vienna is setting new standards in proactive infrastructure maintenance, ensuring the safety and longevity of its street lighting system.
