Messung Wellsburg Bridge

Wellsburg Bridge

PROJECT of the MONTH JANUARY 2025 | Bridge Monitoring Goes International – Recently we reported on the cable damping test at the A26 Danube Bridge in Linz. Now we take a look at our next bridge monitoring project in the USA.

The Wellsburg Bridge impresses us as 253-metre-long network arch bridge with suspended deck and connects Brilliant, Ohio with Wellsburg, West Virginia over the Ohio River.

To ensure the safety and functionality of the 64 hanger cables with free lengths of up to 48 metres, VCE was assigned with measurements of cable damping by Structural Technologies LLC. The hanger cables are equipped with VSL-friction-dampers to reduce undesirable vibrations and to guarantee the required minimum damping of 4.0 % (logarithmic decrement).

Our experts also performed snap-back-tests: The cables were specifically excited to oscillate in the 1st or 2nd eigenfrequency respectively, the decay process was precisely recorded by means of 3D acceleration sensors and subsequently evaluated by means of a curve-fitting algorithm.
